On December 3 and 10, ASM Student Council unanimously passed a new constitution to be voted on by the UW-Madison student body in February. The final draft can be found here.
Pending approval of the Student Judiciary, the dates for the special election for the constitutional amendment will be on Tuesday, February 17 and Wednesday, February 18, 2009.
The Student Election Commission will be running a neutral get-out-the-vote effort, in the week or two leading up to the election. We encourage students students to utilize the supporting documents on this blog to learn more about how the government would change under the proposed constitution as well as the opportunities for involvement it would offer.

I am extremely disappointed to see ASM pick the 17th as one of the dates for the vote. While I can’t speak for any of the four Madison Common Council District 8 campaigns, anyone with ANY experience working local political campaigns will tell you having students bothered about multiple votes they truly know little about — spare me the “we’re going to educate them” schtick — will suppress the desire to turn out voters. Waiting one week would not kill ASM.

After speaking this morning with the Student Elections Commission Chair, Katie Tondrowski, it appears the dates of the election will be moved to the following Monday and Tuesday, February 23 and 24. The Student Judiciary will likely approve these dates this Thursday, January 29.
